Healthcare & COVID-19

Local COVID-19 Regulations

Senegal is recognized as a regional leader in virology, medical training, and public health mangement. During the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Senegal's medical authorities have taken internationally-acclaimed measures to contain the disease as much as possible.

Niofar will keep you informed of any current rules and regulation before your travel in and out of country.

For the moment, there are the following laws:

  • No curfew,

  • If driving with more than 2 individuals in the vehicle, all passengers are required to wear mandatory masks, (penalty of police infraction),

  • Masks are required in large stores, shopping malls, churches, and banks for individuals over 2 years old,

  • Masks are not strictly enforced for pedestrians.

COVID-19 PCR / Rapid Testing Options

  • Are PCR and/or antigen tests available in Senegal? Yes

  • If so, are test results reliably available within 72 hours? Yes

Individuals in Senegal may obtain COVID-19 testing at the following locations. The cost is FCFA 25,000 per test.

Testing must be completed at least 48-hours prior to travel. It is not advisable to wait until less than 24-hours before your flight to do a PCR test.

Please note:

If you are traveling and have a flight confirmation, Niofar can assist in having a doctor come to your home or hotel, to take the COVID test. Results are typically issued electronically within 24-hours.

If you are not traveling, but you feel you may have COVID and can't travel to a health facility, you will need to first have a doctor come to your home to do a general exam (25,000 CFA). They will then give you a prescription for a COVID test, and Niofar can help coordinate a testing doctor at this time.

Dakar's Environment

Harmattan._Dust._City_View_edited.jpg

Allergies, Dust & Pollution

During the months of January - May, Dakar has an increasing problem of air pollution, which contributes to smog, which can sometimes trap the "Harmattan dust" which blows in.

Niofar can help advise you on managing the dust and pollution, to avoid asthma and allergy issues, especially if you are bringing children. When dust is visibly present, consider wearing a mask when leaving home.

We recommend purchasing an air purifier to help manage the pollutants and dust in your home.

Traffic

Like most booming urban centers in Africa, Dakar is having a difficult time keeping up with its exploding population. With increasing numbers of foreigners, traffic circulation has become congested throughout the city. During the rainy season, certain routes become nearly impossible! If you are thinking of bringing or purchasing a car, make sure it is at least a small-sized SUV so you can make your way safely through the unpaved areas of the city.

Stray Animals

For those animal lovers among us, living in Dakar can be particularly difficult. Culturally, most Senegal do not see pets as family members, and stray cats and dogs are seen as nuisances. Stray animals are not managed by the government, many carry rabies and other diseases, and during certain seasons you may find abandoned kittens or puppies. There is not yet an active or functional shelter network for stray animals in Senegal. If you are not able or do not wish to foster or adopt, please think twice about taking in a stray animal. If you have a pet, please let Niofar know - we can recommend quality veterinarians, food and supply shops, and trustworthy sitters. For more information, see Niofar's blog on animals in Senegal.
